A note about milk records:

While milk production is a largely heritable trait, environment and management account for roughly 65% of the variation between individuals as a whole.  Current statistics show that the heritability of milk and fat yields is 35% ( J Dairy Sci. 2012 May;95(5):2707-17. doi: 10.3168/jds.2011-4714).  While we do strive to breed for goats who produce above average quantity and quality of milk, we also do not manage our goats in an extraordinary way.  We dam raise our kids, and dams are typically milked ONCE A DAY after weaning their kids.  If we have does that we want to carry on an extended lactation, we may increase milking frequency for that doe the following spring.  The current system for national capture of dairy records in goats does not offer the flexibility to code for differences in milking frequency of individuals throughout a single lactation - our does are recorded as being milked twice daily, regardless of the true frequency.  In addition, our milking schedule is adjusted to suit our lives, and we don't milk every 12 hours like clockwork in order to maximize production.  We offer quality hay and fresh water 24/7 and feed Purina Noble Goat Dairy Parlor 16% while on the milk stand.  They also have free access to pasture/browse.  With the addition of free access to a loose vitamin/mineral supplement formulated for goats, that is about the extent of our feeding management.  We believe that stock obtained from us should perform similarly to what we see here if feed quality and management is similar to our own once the stress from the move has waned.  They could perform better if managed for optimum performance, or they could perform worse if managed on a minimalist or grass-based approach.

Our management style may not necessarily show Top Ten levels of production, however we do have does who realistically could compete quite well given optimum management.  That said, I won't be counting any of our girls out for contention of Top Ten recognition with our own management, as I know the genetic merit of their ancestry!

Section 196.935

State milk inspection required on all graded fluid milk or milk products--pasteurization required, exception.

196.935. No person shall sell, offer for sale, expose for sale, transport, or deliver any graded fluid milk or graded fluid milk products in this state unless the milk or milk products are graded and produced, transported, processed, manufactured, distributed, labeled and sold under state milk inspection and the same has also been produced or pasteurized as required by a regulation authorized by section 196.939 and under proper permits issued thereunder. Only pasteurized graded fluid milk and fluid milk products as defined in subdivision (3) of section 196.931 shall be sold to the final consumer, or to restaurants, soda fountains, grocery stores, or similar establishments; except an individual may purchase and have delivered to him for his own use raw milk or cream from a farm.
